Basic traffic course
The basic traffic course is a mandatory course for anyone who wants to get a driver's license. The course provides basic knowledge about traffic and road safety, and is intended to help reduce the number of traffic accidents.
It is important to understand that the basic traffic course and the theory test are not the same. The basic traffic course is an introductory course in traffic training that must be completed before you can start practicing driving. The theory test, on the other hand, is an exam that you take later in the training course, and it must be passed in order to proceed to the practical driving test . Many people confuse these two steps, but the basic traffic course is a preparation for all further training, while the theory test tests your knowledge of traffic rules and situations. You can practice for the theory test for free here.
What do you learn on a basic traffic course?

Who must take a basic traffic course?
Anyone under the age of 25 who wants to start practice driving must take a basic traffic course first. If you are over the age of 25, you are exempt from parts of the course, but must still complete dark driving if this is not included in the course you took.
Course duration and content
The course lasts a total of 17 hours and consists of both theory and practical exercises. Some courses include dark driving (for those taking the course in the winter months), while others offer it as an add-on.
Participation requirements
To participate in the basic traffic course, you must be 15 years of age. You do not need any prior knowledge, and there are no requirements for an eye test or medical certificate at this stage.
Cost
The price of a basic traffic course varies depending on the traffic school, but is usually between NOK 1,500 and 3,500. It may be a good idea to check if the school offers package solutions that include several parts of the driver training.
Benefits of taking the course early
- Provides earlier opportunity for practice driving with parents
- Better understanding of road safety before starting to drive
- Reduces the risk of accidents during practice driving
